Are the Seattle Supersonics Coming Back?
What’s the likelihood of the NBA expanding to Seattle and bringing back the Sonics?
It was 1995 and I was a 9-year-old kid.
I was sitting on the sofa one evening, scrolling through the TV channels looking for something to watch.
Then, I came across a basketball game.
At the time, I had only watched a handful of NBA games. I was playing basketball but didn’t start following the league yet.
Anyway, I came across this game. It was the Seattle Supersonics playing against some team. I forget who since it’s been over 20 years (so, give me a break).
But I do vividly remember thinking to myself that their name was really cool.
The Supersonics.
I was a fan of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” game and TV series, and the team’s name just struck interest in me.
So, during recess the next day at school, I asked one of my friends about this team (I’m assuming this is what happened. Again, it has been over 20 years).
“Who’s on that team?”
“Are they good?”
“Who’s their best player?”
He answered all of my questions and pulled out some of the players’ basketball cards that he for some reason had in his backpack.
He showed me a Gary Payton card and told me he was a really good defender.
Then he showed me a card of Shawn Kemp and told me he was one of the best dunkers.
“I think I saw him dunk the ball in yesterday’s game,” I told my friend as I examined the Kemp card.
“Yeah, he does that a lot,” my friend replied.
And this was the first time I talked “sports” with my friends.
And it was because of the Sonics.
The thing is, the Seattle Supersonics aren’t just a basketball club. They are part of basketball culture. They’re a storied team with lots of history and a large fanbase.
And that’s why, as a Sonics fan, it was such a joy when I heard Bill Simmons talking about the potential of the NBA expanding and bringing the team back to Seattle.
“I don’t know what the possibilities would be, but I think Seattle and Vegas are going to have teams. That’s happening… Seattle and Vegas will have teams in the next five, six years.”

Final Thoughts
The Sonics are a team that shouldn’t have been relocated in the first place, and this is some exciting news.
But what are your thoughts on this? Are you a fan of the Seattle Supersonics?
