Canadian players are slowly populating the NBA.
In 2022, a Canadian represented us in the All-Star Game and in the NBA Finals, where he helped his team capture the title.
In 2023, another Canadian helped his team bring home the NBA Championship.
In 2024, a Canadian was the runner-up for the 2023-24 MVP Award.
And their successes are the reason basketball in Canada is growing.
Why do I say that?
Because (might be possibly related) Canada’s premier basketball league, the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is expanding its season in 2025.
The CEBL, which started in 2019, is changing its current 20-game season to a 24-game season, which will increase its total regular-season games from 100 to 120, the league announced on Wednesday.
Via CEBL:
“With an expanded schedule and larger window for our games next summer, our fans will have more fan-friendly options, including more weekend games and two additional home dates to see their favourite CEBL teams and stars live in action,” said Mike Morreale, Commissioner and Co-Founder of the CEBL. “As we continue to take giant leaps forward across the business, it’s clear fans and partners want more CEBL basketball and our players deserve more opportunities to showcase their skills and to earn more. We are happy to be able to deliver all of that as we prepare for another exciting season in 2025.”
To fit in the additional games, the CEBL regular season will start one week earlier and end two weeks later.
Final Thoughts
This expansion is really good.
The CEBL was created, in part, to offer Canadian basketball players another route to develop their skills while earning some income.
With more games, the players will have more opportunities to improve, showcase their skills to the bigger basketball leagues and earn bigger paychecks.
Additionally, the expanded season will allow executives, coaches and referees to develop.
So, this is great news! The league’s growth is awesome and I’m excited to see how this helps out my hometown team.
