Pro wrestlers have this thing where they create bad-guy personas and start conflicts with their opponents.
They do this to draw attention to themselves and to create buzz, and there have been many pro athletes who have used this method.
One of the most renowned ones is Chael Sonnen.
When Sonnen was in the UFC and at the height of his game, he used this tactic to get big fights and draw buzz. He referred to himself as a bad guy and insulted his opponents every time a mic was put in his face.
He would say outrageous things too and the media ate it all up.
Additionally, since he was plastered all over, MMA fans had no choice but to see him and hate him, and to order the pay-per-views to watch him get beat up.
