How Many Points Is Glen Rice Averaging In Today’s Game?
G Money believes he’d be one of the top scorers.
Glen Rice was one of the best shooters in NBA history.
He was also a rare specimen in that he was an outstanding perimeter shooter during an era where long-distance shots were discouraged.
Systems were built on midrange scoring and scoring in the paint, and many times, the 3 wasn't part of the offensive schemes.
Regardless, Rice was proficient at shooting beyond the arc and (for the time) took a lot of them.
Between his third and ninth years in the NBA, he averaged 4.8 threes a game.
For reference, the average amount of threes taken by small forwards in the 90s was 1.4 per game (and 2.1 by shooting guards). Additionally, in the 90s, three-pointers attempted peaked in 1997 when teams were taking 16.8 threes a game.
That’s not that many seeing how there are some players today who average more than half of those attempts by themselves (Steph Curry led the league with 11.2 3-point attempts last season).
Rice made 2.0 three-pointers a game during that period and averaged 40 percent in his career.
Needless to say, Rice was a skilled shooter.
So, when he was asked if he could perform well in today's 3-point-heavy era, he did not hesitate when he said yes.
“I’m going to at least average anywhere between 10-15 threes a game and I’m going to probably make 8-9 of them,” Rice told CourtSide Buzz. “So, I would fit right in.”
Rice added that though he is pleased to see the high levels of three-point shooting, he would like to see more plays inside the arc.
“I mean, I like them shooting threes all the time, but then again, I want to see some inside play as well.”
Rice competed in the NBA for 15 seasons and averaged 1.6 made 3-pointers a game and averaged 18.3 points a game.
He won an NBA championship, was a 3-time All-Star, an All-Star MVP, a 2-time All-NBA, and the 1995 3-Point Contest Champion.
Do you think he would fit in well in this era?
