Kyle Lowry joined the Raptors in the 2012-13 season and it didn’t seem like he was going to stick around for that long.
He had troubles with his previous team, the Houston Rockets, and there were concerns he was going to bring that bad attitude with him to Toronto.
But after a couple of seasons with the Raptors, it was evident he was going to rock a Raptors’ jersey for a while, as he matured as a person and a player.
Fast forward a few years and that prophecy came true -Lowry not only stuck around, but he is now considered the Greatest Raptor of all Time.
He was a 6-time NBA All-Star and was an All-NBA player as a Raptor. He also helped lead the Toronto Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019.
He did a lot for the team and the city and has a profound love for them.
That’s why he’s determined to retire as a Raptor.
During a media scrum before the Miami Heat took on the Raptors on Wednesday, Lowry said that he would not be having a farewell tour when he decides to hang up his sneakers.
He will, however, be signing with Toronto for one day so that he can retire with a Raptors’ uniform on.
“No farewell tour… It’s going to be, like, ‘alright, y’all, peace. Signing with the Raptors for one day and it’s out.’”
He was then asked by a reporter if that’s what he wanted. Lowry said, “Definitely.”
“I'm definitely retiring as a Raptor. That’s something I’ve said since I left here. I will sign that day contract and I will retire as a Toronto Raptor. That's just how it’s going to be.”
Final Thoughts
Lowry still has a lot to offer the game, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be retiring soon.
In 20 games this season, he’s averaging 9 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal.
So, do you think he’ll pull a LeBron and play until he’s 40?
