Over the past few days, the debate of who the greatest point guard is has erupted.
It all started when Steph Curry said on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast, Gil’s Arena, that the GOAT conversation was between him and Magic Johnson.
All of a sudden, all hell broke loose. The modern guys say Curry is better than Magic. The old-school guys say Magic is better than Curry.
Even Michael Jordan, who usually only talks about his own GOAT-ness, came out with a comment saying that Magic is the greatest point guard of all time.
And I agree with his Airness.
Magic Johnson was revolutionary. He was a 6-9 point guard who did point guard things better than the best regular-sized point guards in the NBA.
He created a manual for modern playmaking wings and bigs, such as the likes of LeBron James and Nikola Jokic.
Additionally, he has a bunch of accolades, such as:
5x NBA Champion
3x NBA MVP
3x NBA Finals MVP
However, Steph Curry has also revolutionized the game.
He created the manual for modern point guards to be shooting point guards.
He combined the skills of Reggie Miller with the skills of Steve Nash to create this new type of point guard that has influenced a generation of basketball players.
Additionally, he also has a bunch of accolades, such as:
4x NBA Champion
2x NBA MVP
1x NBA Finals MVP
So, maybe Curry’s the greatest point guard of all time?
Or maybe this GOAT debate is just pure silliness, as Paul George expressed in a recent episode of his podcast.
George said that the GOAT debate is getting to a point where it’s just “annoying” because no one is wrong. Magic is a GOAT and Steph is a GOAT.
“The thing about it, bro, is that nobody is wrong. And this is why the debate stuff is starting to get so annoying at this point. ‘Cause who’s gonna be the person to be like, ‘he’s right.’ But neither of ‘em is wrong in this situation…
“We gotta highlight Magic ‘cause he is the GOAT. Steph Curry is a GOAT. [There’s] gonna be people that come after Steph Curry that’s gonna challenge the legacy of what Steph Curry did.”
So, what do you think?
Do you think there need to be debates on who the best of the best is? Or should we just appreciate all of the greats for what they bring/brought to the game?
