Redick Says Wemby Has This One Trait Only A Handful of Legends Possessed
JJ Redick gave Victor Wembanyama some high praise.
What is there to say about Victor Wembanyama?
The guy was phenomenal in his first NBA season and exceeded everyone’s expectations.
He showed that he could do everything on the court; that his skills are tight. He can score in a multitude of ways, he can set up plays and he can defend (boy, can he defend!).
But despite having tremendous on-court talent, JJ Redick believes the thing that will make Wembanyama a legend is a non-basketball trait that very few NBA legends have possessed.
On an episode of 7PM In Brooklyn, Redick told Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero that Wemby is low maintenance and this lack of ego and selfishness can make him great (starting at approximately the 43:00 minute mark).
”The stories I heard coming out of the Spurs camp early in the season where he was getting asked, like there was a Drake concert in Austin and he got asked to come on stage -because Drake was doing that with a bunch of NBA guys this offseason- and Wemby was like, ‘Can my teammates come up with me because they’re going to be at the concert with me?’ And Drake’s camp was like, ‘No.’ And he’s like, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ What 19-year-old kid doesn’t want to go up on stage and drink?
“There’s been anomalies for star players in that they have been low maintenance. I mean I was a role player and I would describe myself as somewhat low-maintenance. There’s like Steph [Curry] and there’s like Tim Duncan. Wemby’s one of those guys, you know? That to me is as impressive as anything he’s done on the court.”
To put Wembanyama on the same level as Curry and Duncan is some high praise from Redick.
And I hope Wemby is the next legendary player because he is awesome.
