So Many Records Were Broken This Past Weekend!
WNBA stars break huge records as the season closes out.
Caitlin Clark has been doing amazing things in her rookie season.
She has broken a bunch of records, and over the weekend, she proved that she’s the greatest rookie in the history of the WNBA.
In a win over the Dallas Wings, she recorded a career-high 35 points and broke the season scoring record for rookies with 761 points.
She also set the all-time assists record with 329 a few days before that in a game against the Las Vegas Aces.
Clark says a lot of records are being broken because of good basketball.
Via The Washington Post:
“It definitely just speaks to the whole entire year and how historic it’s been,” Clark said Friday after setting the assists mark. “You’re just going to continue to see records taken down — and also really good basketball. That’s why it’s been so fun to watch and the fans have been showing up and the viewership has crushed this year. Everyone is raising their game, and the competition is getting better and better.”
In her rookie season, Clark is averaging 19.5 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
Ever since the first game of the season, we all knew A’ja Wilson was poised to have a legendary one.
And over the weekend, she locked that belief in as she became the first WNBA player to score 1000 points in a regular season.
She scored her thousandth point in a win against the Connecticut Sun.
Wilson says she was able to achieve this huge goal because she focused on the “little things.”
Via ABC News:
"I really try to pinpoint little things," Wilson said of how she continues to improve after winning two previous MVP awards and two WNBA titles. "Everyone can come in and say, 'Oh, I want to win a championship.' But what are the little things you're going to do to get to that point? That's what I want to be great in.
"I really have to credit my offseason work and my preparation. I take time to get away from basketball, to let me miss it. So then when I'm in it, I don't take it for granted. My screensaver is, 'Rest at the end, not in the middle,' and that's something I tell myself every single day.
"I got work to do, that that's going to be my mindset until I'm done playing, until I've squeezed everything out of this game."
Wilson is averaging 27 points per game this season.
In her 195th game, a match against the Indiana Fever -the same one that made Caitlin Clark a legendary rookie- the Dallas Stars’ Arike Ogunbowale became the fastest WNBA player to reach 4000 points.
The previous record holder was the New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, who did it in 196 games.
Ogunbowale had to score a team-high 27 points in this win to reach 4000.
In 6 WNBA seasons, she is averaging 20.2 points per game.
