The History of the “Big Ball” Dance
Soooo many players have been fined for this lewd celebration.
Before we get to today’s story, I wanted to let you guys know that I will be increasing my paid subscription prices on Oct. 14, 2024.
I will be increasing the monthly price from $6 a month to $8 on the monthly plan.
For the annual plan, I will be increasing it from $65 a year to $80.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way…
On Nov. 11, 2021, the Toronto Raptors’ Fred VanVleet hit a buzzer-beating corner 3 to lift his team over the Philadelphia 76ers.
As the ball slid through the hoop and the final buzzer went off, his excitement ignited and he ran down the floor to celebrate the big shot and win.
He took his hands, cupped them around his genitals and hopped toward his bench.
One would imagine that VanVleet went to bed happy that night.
And I’m sure he did. I mean, the Raptors were coming off of a 3 game losing streak and this win was much needed.
But the following day, he received a message from the NBA that he had been fined $15,000 for doing the “Big Ball” dance, an obscene gesture that has cost players a lot of money over the years.
And it all started back in the early 2000s with San Cassell.
Cassell, who was on the Draymond Green Show, admitted that he stole the dance from the movie Major League II and busted it out one game when he was the Milwaukee Bucks.
Though, he doesn’t remember the exact game.
“I watched the movie Major League II. It’s got the Asian left-fielder. [Forgot the name]. He jumped up -somebody hit a home run -he jumped up on the fence and caught the ball. And he just came down with the big balls dance. And I was like, ‘I like that. I’mma steal that. I’m stealing that.’”
Initially, the NBA didn’t punish Cassell for doing the celebration because nobody knew what he was doing.
But once the league recognized his shenanigans, the then-commissioner David Stern gave Cassell a stern warning (pun intended) that if he did it again, he would be fined $25,000.
Thus, he stopped.
But the thing is the celebration caught on and everybody from Kobe Bryant to LeBron James was doing it.
And players are still doing it today.
So, I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. I think players are going to continue getting fined for the celebration.
Do you think the “Big Balls” dance is going to stop?
