If you can recall back to when Dwight Howard was starting his NBA career, he was one of the goofiest guys.
Howard was always smiling and having fun. He even played jokes on teammates and opponents.
Because of this, Howard was one of the most popular players in the NBA.
I loved his personality and he was one of my favourite players. I even bought one of his jersey t-shirts because he was humorous.
But why was he such a jolly guy?
Apparently, he was like that because he was imitating Magic Johnson.
On an episode of the DH12 podcast, he told Jeanie Buss that he idolized Magic growing up and wanted to possess the legend’s charisma on the court. He wanted to make the game fun for the fans and himself.
“Just Magic from his inspiration from those tapes,” Howard said. “From me just watching him do all of those moves -that’s why I smiled so much on the court. It was from Magic Johnson. I thought it was so cool. I was like, ‘Man, Magic Johnson, he having a good time, he throwing no-look passes.’”
Howard also talked about how he wanted to play point guard like Magic. When he set out on his basketball journey, he intended to be a big 6-9 point guard like his idol.
In the late 2000s, during his Orlando days, almost every fan loved Howard.
He played fantastic basketball and was having a good time, and this led to his jersey perennially being a top-15 seller for multiple years.
And a lot of that success came from him just being a fun guy.
