A’ja Wilson had a hell of a week!
Wilson’s 20-20 Game
On Wednesday, July 10, Wilson notched her first (and the season’s first) 20-20 game in a win against the Seattle Storm. She recorded 24 points and 20 rebounds as the Las Vegas Aces routed the Storm 84-79.
After the game, she said she had trouble sinking baskets (38.9 percent field goal), so she had to do something else to contribute, and that something turned out to be grabbing boards.
Via ESPN:
"Getting 20 rebounds? My shot wasn't going so I was like, 'I've got to do something out here. I didn't travel to Seattle for just cardio,'" Wilson joked. "So it turned out to be rebounds."
This was the 21st 20-20 game in WNBA history. With it, she joins Natalie Williams (the first to do it), Chamique Holdsclaw, Candace Parker, Tina Charles, and Sylvia Folwes.
Wilson’s 7th 30-point Game
Then, on Friday, July 12th, the arguably most dominant player in the game got her seventh 30-point game.
But it wasn’t just a regular ol’ 30-point performance. Wilson also grabbed 18 rebounds to go with her efficient 33 points (56.5 field goal percentage) to make this double-double a super-sized combo. She also had 5 blocks.
This was her tenth game of 25-plus points and 10-plus rebounds this season.
Wilson helped the Aces defeat the Atlanta Dream 84-70 with this spectacular showing.
With her current averages of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 2.7 blocks, she is favoured to win the 2024 WNBA MVP title. If she does win it this season, it will be her third MVP Trophy.
And with how she’s been playing thus far, I think she’s getting it. But what do you think? Does Wilson deserve it?
The Aces are currently second in the Western Conference with a record of 15-7.
