Tim Duncan Was Disrespectful AF
LaMarcus Aldridge tells a story about his first encounter with The Big Fundamental.
If you followed Tim Duncan’s career, you’d know that he was the exact opposite of Kevin Garnett.
The former was quiet and expressionless. From the viewer’s standpoint, he never talked smack or got into his opponent’s face or any of that. Duncan just went out there and played basketball.
Garnett, on the other hand, was loud, brash and bold. He had high energy and was constantly getting into his opponent’s face. He was competitive and he wore it on his sleeve.
But, believe it or not, Duncan was so much more disrespectful than Garnett.
Though KG was creative with his disses (such as that one time he looked at a rookie Andray Blatche’s jersey and then asked his teammates who it was), he often just got loud and disrespected his opponents.
Duncan belittled his opponents.
On the Knuckleheads podcast, LaMarcus Aldridge was asked who was the first player to bust his ass in the NBA.
He told Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles a story about how Duncan killed him and then proceeded to encourage him like a little kid.
“Tim Duncan -man, that motherf—ker… he gave me like 14 straight points then hit me in the butt and said, ‘You gon’ be okay.’ I was like, Man, don’t talk to me like that. Don’t root for me when you bust my ass.’ I would talk s—t to him so I can get mad, then he would hit in my butt and say, ‘It’s okay.’ You know? Like, ‘You trying.’”
Now, some people might misconstrue this as Duncan being a nice guy. But he was most definitely playing mind games. I can almost guarantee that he’s a practitioner of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.
Anyway, Aldridge eventually joined Duncan in San Antonio for the 2015-16 season and the Spurs had one of the greatest seasons in NBA history by winning 67 games.
However, they were overshadowed by the Golden State Warriors, who won 73, but that’s another story for another time.
