Look, I’m no NBA GM.
I also don’t have good business sense. I’m not that bright either.
But you can agree with me that the Phoenix Suns didn’t set out to do what they wanted to do this season, right? Like, they failed their goal, right?
At the beginning of the 2023-24 NBA season, they set out to win the NBA championship.
They tried to create a big 3 when they traded Chris Paul for Bradley Beal in hopes that the trio of Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant would take them to the NBA Promise Land.
Instead, Phoenix ended the regular season sitting sixth in the Western Conference and was swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
And yes, injuries did play a factor. But swept in the first round? Come on. With that talent, they could’ve won at least one game.
With that said, we can come to an accord that the Suns failed. That is the consensus.
So, why does the Suns’ owner, Mat Ishbia, think differently?
Talking to the media, he said that he doesn’t think the Suns did poorly this season. They, he says, didn’t meet their expectations, but they in no way failed.
Via The Score:
“The narrative that the house is burning is incorrect,” Ishbia said. “The Phoenix Suns are doing great. Excellent. Not as good as we want to be. Not as good as we're going to do next year. And that's what we're going to figure out — what we've got to tweak, modify and adjust to win a championship next year.”
As I said earlier, I’m not an NBA GM or owner, so I don’t know how to build championship-winning teams and dynasties.
Thus, I don’t know what Ishbia sees in this current Suns’ roster.
But what I do know is that owners and GMs lie.
So, could he just be saying this to make his organization look good, and to give his coaches and players reassurance that no big changes are going to happen?
But then when the offseason comes around, he’s going to make big changes.
I don’t know. But it wouldn’t be the first time something like this happens.
