Klay Thompson is undoubtedly a Golden State legend.
He was drafted onto the team in 2011, has been with the organization since, and played a crucial role on the Warriors’ four championship runs.
He also represented Golden State five times in the NBA All-Star Game.
But over the past couple of seasons, the team has been slowing down. Their style, playbook, and players haven't been as effective as they once were.
In 2021-22, the Warriors won 53 regular season games and beat the Boston Celtics in the Finals to win their fourth title.
But since then, Golden State has been lackluster.
In 2022-23, they had a rough start to the season and only won 44 games. However, they managed to get into the playoffs, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the semifinals.
Then, this past season, they didn't even make it into the playoffs (however, they won 46 games).
This once dominant dynasty is definitely losing its way and one reason is that their roster isn't meshing well anymore.
The Warriors have too many old players on big contracts. These players also take up a lot of playing time, which leads to the young players not getting playing time to develop.
And I’m sure the Warriors' brass knows this.
Thompson, I’m sure, also senses this.
That's why, according to reports, he's considering leaving Golden State for the Orlando Magic next season.
On FanDuel's "Run It Back TV," Shams Charania reported that the Magic has cap space and are going to target Thompson, a skilled shooter, in the offseason and Thompson is interested in their offer.
"One name to keep an eye on is Klay Thompson. I'm told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Thompson. Thompson along with several vets around the league are looking at the Magic as a situation where if you plug in a guy like Klay Thompson and another veteran player, whether it be at the point guard position or the shooting guard position, this team can make a real jump."
If Thompson, who averaged 17.9 points per game last season, decides to join the Magic, it will be the end of a fantastic era in Golden State.
